X's Data Reveals Decreased User Time Spent in 2024

X User Engagement Declines in 2024: Analyzing the Data
Sharing vague, context-free statistics has become a recurring theme for X. The latest figures shared by the platform seem more designed to impress at face value than to provide meaningful insights. This approach continues under X CEO Linda Yaccarino, whose recent statement exemplifies the issue:

“Here’s a stat that blows my mind: Users spent 364 billion seconds on X last year. That’s 11,500 years collectively ????????”
Linda Yaccarino (@lindayaX), January 14, 2025

At first glance, this figure of 364 billion seconds spent on X in 2024 sounds monumental. Yaccarino equates it to 11,500 collective years. However, the critical context missing from her statement is whether this represents daily or yearly user activity. If it’s the total annual figure, it would mean users spent only 0.07 minutes per day in the app — a concerningly low metric.

The more likely scenario is that this represents 364 billion seconds per day, as X highlighted in its 2024 overview. While this framing sounds impressive, it becomes less so when broken down:

  • 364 billion seconds per day, divided by X’s reported 250 million daily active users, equals about 24 minutes per user daily.

This marks a noticeable decline compared to X’s earlier claim in March 2024 that users averaged 30 minutes per day on the app. Additionally, it’s lower than the previously reported 8 billion minutes of cumulative daily usage, equivalent to 480 billion seconds per day.

These discrepancies suggest one of two possibilities:

  1. X experienced a significant drop in user engagement, with average time spent per user falling by six minutes per day over the year.
  2. The platform's data reporting lacks consistency, leading to conflicting narratives.

Declining Time Spent Compared to Pre-Elon Era

Even at 24 minutes per user daily, X’s current engagement lags behind figures from before Elon Musk’s acquisition. Twitter, as it was then known, once reported that users spent an average of 35 minutes per day on the platform.

Without transparency, it’s impossible to confirm the accuracy of these figures or determine what Yaccarino’s metrics truly represent. X, now a private company, is not obligated to release official usage statistics, making it difficult to verify or contextualize the numbers it shares.

Misleading Framing?

While Yaccarino’s statement might aim to highlight X’s achievements, it unintentionally underscores declining user engagement. By emphasizing billions of seconds without clear explanation, the data appears more significant than it is when broken into meaningful metrics.

This is not necessarily an indictment of X’s performance or its leadership but a critique of its communication strategy. A clearer, more consistent approach to reporting would foster trust and provide a clearer picture of the platform’s success.

The Bottom Line

The variance in X’s data could stem from evolving reporting methods or shifts in user behavior, such as increased activity among fewer users. Regardless, the framing of statistics matters. While billions of seconds sound impressive, the reality of declining engagement becomes evident when you dig deeper into the numbers.
