Elon Musk’s X Sees Decline After Election While Threads and Bluesky Surge

March 28, 2025

Threads & Bluesky Gain Users as X Traffic Declines
Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), is facing a noticeable drop in U.S. user traffic following the 2024 presidential election, according to new data from Similarweb. Meanwhile, rival platforms Threads and Bluesky are experiencing surges in daily engagement and web visits.

Post-Election Shift in User Behavior

After a brief spike in traffic during election week, X has seen its momentum fade. Daily web visits to the platform have decreased by 8.4%, and average monthly active users have declined 7.2%, now sitting at approximately 25 million, per Similarweb’s data.

In contrast, Meta’s Threads platform has shown a 14% increase in daily active users, reaching 13.6 million. Though smaller in scale, Bluesky has maintained strong post-election growth. Web visits are up 21.5%, and daily active users have increased by 2.3%, now totaling 1.5 million – nearly triple what it had at the start of November.

A Deeper Dive into X’s Traffic Trends

The initial election surge brought X up to 46.5 million daily web visits on Election Day, but that number has since fallen 34.2%, landing at 30.6 million as of March 21. Likewise, daily users on X’s mobile apps (iOS and Android) have dropped by 22.1%, falling to 24.3 million.

Musk’s heavy posting around the election – reportedly generating over 33 billion views – may have contributed to the Election Day peak. However, the boost was temporary.

The Musk Factor

Elon Musk’s public and political actions continue to shape X’s public perception. As an outspoken supporter of Donald Trump and figurehead of the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk’s alignment with far-right ideologies has driven a shift in platform demographics.

His controversial behavior in early 2025 – including online posts with Nazi-related references and a widely criticized gesture – has further alienated parts of X’s user base and fueled scrutiny across the tech industry. Critics have also pointed to Musk’s diminishing presence at Tesla as evidence of his shifting focus toward political influence.
