Elon Musk Announces XChat: Encrypted Messaging With Vanishing Features

Elon Musk has introduced XChat, a new messaging system built into X (formerly Twitter), offering end-to-end encryption and a disappearing message mode. The feature, now rolling out to beta testers, marks another step toward Musk’s goal of transforming X into a multi-functional communication platform.

XChat is built using the Rust programming language and employs an encryption model similar to Bitcoin’s cryptographic principles. Musk highlighted this architecture in his announcement, touting the platform’s enhanced security for personal conversations.

One of the most anticipated elements is the vanishing message feature. Independent app researcher Nimo Owji previously leaked screenshots showing user options to auto-delete messages after 5 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, or 1 day. These settings can be adjusted based on user preference.

The feature is being gradually rolled out to early beta testers, with more widespread access expected later in 2025.

XChat's feature set puts it in direct competition with standalone encrypted messengers like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram. However, the integration within X offers users a unified experience—social media, payments, and now secure messaging—all in one app.

There’s speculation about whether users will be able to leverage Grok—xAI’s AI assistant—for additional interactive messaging functions like doodling or auto-scribbling. If integrated, this could offer a playful and creative edge over rival platforms.
